Dr. Rajeswari Ramachandran has a Ph. D degree from Madras University in neuro tuberculosis. She was awarded with Dr.Vasudeva Rao gold medal for proficiency in chest diseases. She started her career as Research Officer in Tuberculosis research centre, Chennai, a permanent establishment under ICMR, is an internationally recognized institution for Tuberculosis research and later promoted to Deputy Director (Senior Grade) - Scientist ‘F’. She served the organization for 15 years.
She has expertise in the field of medicine (Neurology) for five areas, Conducted randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs), Operational Research studies, Advocacy & Capacity building related to TB control programs and Consultancy (WHO, SEARO, DBT, Central TB Division, Govt. of India).
She is a trained neurologist with the highest medical degree in Neurology. She was involved in initiating several RCTs in neuro tuberculosis such as Potts paraplegia and brain tuberculoma which were the first of their kind in India and established the role of short course chemotherapy in these disease conditions. The finding of these clinical trials has been published in international journals.
She had performed several Randomized Controlled Clinical Trials in Pulmonary and extra pulmonary Tuberculosis. She has played a key role in several clinical studies, which addressed important research issues in tuberculosis.
She is extensively involved in planning, monitoring and evaluation of the national TB control programme. She had played a key role in modeling of DOTS plus project and HIV-TB. Dr. Rajeshwari made a significant contribution in the area of training in RNTCP by bringing forth innovative training methodologies. She was invited as a National trainer to 4 south East Asian countries.
She served as a consultant in the preparation of Revised National TB Control Programme (RNTCP) modules and provides Technical support to the national TB control programme. She is a holder of around 80 publications both in national and international journals pertaining to clinical trials, operational research, and review papers. She received the Benjamin Oration and chaired several forums in National and International conferences/workshops.
